Long-time X-Men film producer and Dark Phoenix director Simon Kinberg picks Iron Man as the Marvel hero he wants to see crossover with the mutants the most. Disney’s recently finished acquisition of Fox’s TV and movie assets effectively brings back the rights to the X-Men, Fantastic Four and all their tie-in characters to Marvel, which means that Marvel Studios and Kevin Feige can now integrate them into the MCU. And if Kinberg has any say on future plans regarding these superheroes, he will start with Robert Downey Jr.’s Tony Stark interacting with the mutants.

The inaugural character of the MCU, Jon Favreau and Downey’s Iron Man in 2008 paved the way for much of what the franchise. And more than a decade later, the genius billionaire continues to be the poster boy of the film series. But his stint may be ending soon with Joe and Anthony Russo’s Avengers: Endgame, which is touted as the culmination of everything that has transpired in the universe over the last 10 years. Despite this, Kinberg is hoping to see Stark rubbing elbows with the X-Men down the road.

Speaking with Variety, Kinberg was asked which character from the MCU he’s dying to see interact with the X-Men, and he picked some great choices from Black Panther’s Wakanda or Iron Man. The producer, who previously worked with Downey having written Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes, cited the latter in particular saying he loves what the actor did with that character and how his take on the hero impacted the whole franchise. He added that he would love a back-and-forth between Stark and Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool as well.

Both of Kinberg’s picks pose some interesting possibilities. First, prominent X-Men member Storm has a history with Black Panther and Wakandan King T’Challa (Chadwick Boseman) in print. And even if the MCU doesn’t closely adhere to the source material, it will be great for comics readers to have their relationship somehow be adapted on the big screen. Meanwhile, just the thought of Iron Man’s personality mixing with the X-Men, not to mention Deadpool, in itself is already piquing the curiosity of fans. The question is whether or not the character will still be active in the MCU once the mutants make their debut (which won’t be until 2021) considering the upcoming events in Endgame.

“I’m a fan of so many of those MCU characters. I guess I would say probably either somebody from Wakanda or Iron Man. I mean, I love [Robert Downey Jr.]. I’ve worked with him. I love what he does with that character. I feel he created the tonal template for the MCU with the first Iron Man movie, and so the notion Iron Man popping up in X-Men or Iron Man interacting with Deadpool is pretty exciting.”

Assuming this all happens in the future, chances are it won’t be with the current roster of X-Men actors since the main film saga will be mostly rebooted. At this point, their lore is already too convoluted to carry over to the MCU, which also has a complex  history. On the other hand, Deadpool is expected to be adapted to the MCU, although it’s still uncertain how his R-rating will work with Disney’s family-friendly vibe.
