A line of fans waiting to get into the Anaheim Convention Center for D23 started forming two days before the official start of the event. D23 is Disney’s biannual fan expo that has become one of the most significant events for the company. The event, which occurs at the Anaheim Convention Center, brings a host of Disney celebrities to fans, offers exclusive sneak peeks at upcoming projects and opportunities to purchase exclusive merchandise.
At this year’s event, fans can expect to get a lot of new Star Wars information. This includes the first trailer for The Mandalorian, the Disney+ series that will premiere with the launch of the service later this year. Star Wars fans might also finally get official word that Ewan McGregor will star in an Obi-Wan Kenobi series for the streaming service. Disney will update fans on the latest about its theme parks, including some highly anticipated renovation plans for EPCOT at Walt Disney World in Florida. Fans will also get more information about upcoming Marvel movies and TV shows, as well as details about Disney’s plans for Hulu.
This year’s expo is already a hit with fans: D23 sold out about a week before the event was scheduled to start. Perhaps that’s why it isn’t surprising some fans have already started lining up for the expo. Parks and Cons posted a video on Twitter of the line on Wednesday, a full two days before the event begins. As the Anaheim Convention Center and D23 won’t allow fans to line up at the site itself, they’re camping out on the streets outside of the center in hopes of being among the first to get inside on Friday.
It’s no secret that this year’s D23 could be one of the biggest Disney has ever held. In addition to the upcoming launch of Disney+, the company has several new properties under its umbrella. For example, Disney’s recent acquisition of Fox assets means The Simpsons will have their first showing at D23 this year. That acquisition could also mean fans might get a hint about the company’s plans for the X-Men. Hulu will also have a showing at the event, with Disney showcasing some of that service’s content, including The Handmaid’s Tale and Marvel’s Runaways.
Disney has always had its share of die-hard fans, including those willing to wait outside for days in the hot Southern California sun. It will be interesting to see just how long the line gets before D23 officially begins on Friday, August 23.
