Cyberpunk 2077 may be getting a multiplayer mode, according to CD Projekt Red developer and quest designer Patrick Mills. The game, which will primarily be a single-player experience, has the potential to feature an online multiplayer system, although the studio is remaining coy about whether or not that will actually be the case.
Cyberpunk 2077 is one of the most hotly anticipated games following an exciting E3 2018 trailer. That, coupled with some incredible hands-on reviews from attendees lucky enough to try the game at E3 2018 this year, has generated enough buzz to make CD Projekt Red’s technological dystopia one of the must-see locations in gaming once it launches. Cyberpunk 2077 will be CD Projekt Red’s first major RPG IP since the studio released The Witcher 3, a title that many fans have labelled the greatest iteration of its genre in the history of games.
Cyberpunk 2077 is still mostly focused on topping the single-player experience that The Witcher 3 offered, however. According to an interview with Mills, conducted by Eurogamer, CD Projekt Red is completely focused on giving players a single-play experience at launch. However, that hasn’t ruled out the possibility that Cyberpunk 2077 will eventually give fans some multiplayer functionality as well, according to Mills:
According to Mills, R&D at CD Projekt Red isn’t limited to just the specific project they’re working on, meaning that the multiplayer the studio is currently developing might be a possibility for Cyberpunk 2077 - or it could be something the studio sits on, iterates some more, and includes in another project later on. When prompted about whether the multiplayer could make an appearance post-launch, Mills was noncommittal, but still offered up some hope:
“We have multiplayer in R&D, but the game we’re shipping to you, the game you’re going to buy is the single-player experience.”
As much as CD Projekt Red is downplaying the potential for multiplayer in Cyberpunk 2077, they seem to have built a pretty exciting world for it. Floor impressions of the Cyberpunk 2077 demo at E3 2018 heaped praise onto the game’s flexible fighting styles and innovative, massive world environment. That sounds like the recipe for a well-received multiplayer mode down the pipeline, and CD Projekt Red’s recently approved Polish government grant proposals were to receive funding to develop a seamless multiplayer experience.
“Maybe, no promises. Nothing at launch. At launch, we’re concentrating on the single-play game. That’s what we want to give you.”
Of course, that’s probably exactly the same experience that is in CD Projekt Red’s R&D department right now. It’s a complicated technology that might not be ready for a long time. Would-be cyber punks, however, can still hold out some hope that multiplayer is coming to Cyberpunk 2077 after all.
