The gaming landscape of 2020 has been reshuffled once more, as CD Projekt Red has announced that Cyberpunk 2077 has been delayed from April to September. Cyberpunk 2077 is easily one of the most anticipated games of 2020 and many people were excited for the next big game from the same studio that brought us The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.

Cyberpunk 2077 is an RPG set in Night City, in a world that is dominated by cybernetics and robots. The game recently caused a stir at E3 2019, when it was revealed that Keanu Reeves was lending his likeness and voice to the game in the role of Johnny Silverhand. Reeves’ memorable interaction with the crowd helped hype up Cyberpunk 2077 even further.

It seems that the fans of the breathtaking Mr. Reeves will have to wait longer than anticipated to hang out with him in Night City. A statement on the official CD Projekt Red Twitter page has confirmed that Cyberpunk 2077 has been pushed back from April to September 17. The reason for this is that the game needs more playtesting and polish before its ready to be released.

There have been a ton of delays over the past few months that have changed the gaming landscape of 2020, most notably with Final Fantasy VII Remake, Marvel’s Avengers, and Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines 2. Paradox Interactive revealed the Bloodlines 2 delay back in October, which put the game out of its original March release window (and some fierce competition) and its release date is currently unknown, but the recent news might lead to it being pushed to October or November. The company that should be thankful to CD Projekt Red is Square Enix, as Final Fantasy VII Remake was delayed to April and Cyberpunk 2077 has now been pushed far away from it in the schedule.

This means that two of the biggest games in 2020 will no longer be competing for the attention of fans or the money in their wallets. The delay of Cyberpunk 2077 has put it in within arms reach of another game that Square Enix is publishing, as Marvel’s Avengers was recently delayed to September and it’s now a few weeks away from Cyberpunk 2077 in the schedule. Cyberpunk 2077 is shaping up to be one of the best games of 2020 and it’s disappointing that it has been delayed to later in the year. If the game really needs work, then the delay will be worth it. As Shigeru Miyamoto famously said - “A delayed game is eventually good, but a rushed game is forever bad.” 2020 is packed with exciting games and the killer March/April schedule has more than enough to keep fans satisfied during the wait
