CW’s slate of DC superhero TV shows continues to expand, with Supergirl making the move over to the network this year from her previous home on CBS. The quartet of shows will span four successive nights in primetime, and now it looks like the work week will be fully rounded out with yet another heroine added to the mix.

Vixen, a.k.a. Mari McCabe (Megalyn Echikunwoke), joined the Arrowverse last year in animated form on CWseed.com, where you can now watch the full first season. Once her origin story was established, where she learns to channel energy from her family’s African totem necklace to manifest the powers of animals, Vixen made the move to live-action in an episode of Arrow.

Though CW Seed promised a season 2 of Vixen, the release date was only narrowed down to this fall. Now TV Insider reports that the second set of six episodes will kick off on Thursday, October 13, on the website as well as the CW Seed app. New episodes will be then be released every Friday thereafter. This season sees Mari facing off against a new, mysterious adversary who also uses the power of a magical totem.

The San Diego Comic-Con trailer for Vixen season 2 includes appearances from The Flash (Grant Gustin) and Firestorm (Franz Drameh/Victor Garber), but they won’t be the only guest stars in the series. We’ll also see Green Arrow (Stephen Amell), Felicity Smoak (Emily Bett Rickards), Cisco Ramon (Carlos Valdes), Atom (Brandon Routh), and – since this story takes place earlier in the Arrowverse timeline – Black Canary (Katie Cassidy). Executive producer Marc Guggenheim promises that Mari’s story will go beyond Detroit, and the wealth of characters will help tell that story.

It’s good to hear that adding other superhero into the mix won’t dilute our focus on Vixen. The first season managed to pack a lot of exposition and action into the 5-minute episodes, and it’ll be interesting to see what they can accomplish with this next chapter in Mari’s life. This fall we’ll also get added enlightenment on Mari’s ancestry, with her grandmother Amaya Jiwe (Maisie Richardson-Sellers) set to appear in the upcoming second season of Legends of Tomorrow.

“In keeping with Mari’s journey of acknowledging that there’s a bigger world out there, we wanted to dramatize that by doubling down on the number of characters we reveal in animated form. It’s something that’s really cool and it’s not just a gimmick. It plays directly into Mari’s character journey.”

The Flash season 3 will premiere Tuesday October 4 at 8pm on The CW, Arrow season 5 will premiere in the same timeslot on Wednesday October 5, Supergirl season 2 on Monday October 10, and Vixen and Legends of Tomorrow season 2 on Thursday October 13.
