The 100, which has aired on The CW since 2014, will be coming to end after its upcoming seventh season. The season will consist of 16 episodes, as previously announced.

The news comes after several long-running CW shows have either announced their final season or aired their final episode. In March, Arrow announced that its truncated eighth season would be its last. That news was followed, just a few weeks later, with the cast of Supernatural informing their fans that the Winchester brothers would conclude their journey after 15 seasons. Other favorites, like Jane The Virgin and Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, have recently aired their finales. With all these network stalwarts bowing out, the channel that dares to defy could be looking entirely different in the next few years.

Jason Rothenberg, who created The 100, broke the news in a tweet. Describing his feelings as bittersweet, Rothenberg expressed his eternal gratitude to The CW for allowing the story of The 100 to unfold on its own terms, and for offering all those involved a chance to properly wrap things up. The tweet has over seven thousand likes, with many viewers sharing their hopes for what a final season might include.

Loosely based on the book series of the same name by Kass Morgan, The 100 is a drama that blends science fiction with post-apocalyptic elements. It tells the story of criminal adolescents that are among the first people to return to Earth after a nuclear disaster which devastated much of the planet. Due to the heightened nature of the plot, many characters have come and gone in the past six seasons. But Eliza Taylor, who plays Clarke Griffin, and Bob Morley, who plays Bellamy Blake, are among those that have stuck around since the beginning. Both actors have been nominated for several Teen Choice Awards, and the show itself has been frequently praised for presenting high concepts and moral quandaries in an enjoyable package.

Another result of the show’s plot is that viewers are frequently left with burning questions. In an interview with Screen Rant, which included several other members of the cast as well as Rothenberg, star Marie Avgeropoulos elaborated on her character’s complexities and how that affects the expectations of the audience. Avgeropoulos has played Octavia Blake since the first season of The 100, and she spoke approvingly of the show’s ability to let characters go in dark directions but, at the same time, to offer redemption. When The 100 returns for its last season, it’ll be undoubtedly fitting in at least one sense: the final episode will also be the 100th.
