An official trailer for The Curse of La Llorona has arrived. Inspired by the real-world folk tale of La Llorona, The Curse of La Llorona marks the latest supernatural horror-thriller from Warner Bros., New Line Cinema, and James Wan, who first worked together on 2013’s The Conjuring. Following that film’s runaway success, Wan helped WB and New Line to construct an entire universe of Conjuring sequels, prequels, and spinoffs, including The Nun and Annabelle series. Last year, however, Wan took a break from horror to direct WB’s DCEU adventure Aquaman, which has since become a billion-dollar hit at the global box office.

While Wan is expected to direct Aquaman 2 next, his time working on horror films is far from over. The director is producing both Curse of La Llorona and the upcoming Annabelle 3 - which he also cowrote the story for - and is slated to produce The Conjuring 3 later this year, with up and comer Michael Chaves taking his place as director. Chaves also called the shots on The Curse of La Llorona, which is how he landed The Conjuring 3 job to begin with. He’s a good match for the Conjuring-verse too, if the marketing for his feature debut is any indicator.

Warner Bros. has dropped the full trailer for The Curse of La Llorona online, following the teaser trailer’s release last October. Chaves’ thriller is one of a handful of buzzed-about horror movies set to make their world premiere at SXSW 2019 in March, along with Paramount Pictures’ Pet Sematary remake and Us, which is Jordan Peele’s Blumhouse-produced followup to his Oscar-winning hit Get Out. You can watch the new trailer for The Curse of La Llorona below.

The new trailer for Curse of La Llorona lays out the basics of the film’s plot, which was written by relative newcomers Mikki Daughtry and Tobias Iaconis (who also wrote March’s Five Feet Apart adaptation). Set in the ’70s, Curse of La Llorona revolves around a social worker (Linda Cardellini) whose children are targeted by the infamous specter known as La Llorona, after she ignores a warning from a troubled mother who knows all too well how real “The Weeping Woman” truly is. The official trailer further spotlights Tony Amendola (The Mask of Zorro, Stargate SG-1), who costars as a disillusioned priest that tries to help Cardellini’s character protect her kids after La Llorona adds them to her list of children-to-drown.

Like the teaser, The Curse of La Llorona trailer is heavy on jump scares and spooky atmosphere, above all else. The movie continues to feel like a secret Conjuring film for the same reason - to mention nothing of Wan’s involvement as producer and Chaves’ commitment to Conjuring 3. Considering it has most of the same ingredients that made the original Conjuring a success, there’s a reasonable chance the film will become another low-budget horror hit for WB, if not the beginning of a new franchise altogether. We’ll have a better idea if that’s even possible after The Curse of La Llorona screens at SXSW in about a month or so.
