Warning: Spoilers ahead for Crisis on Infinite Earths Part Four.

A cameo by Ezra Miller, the DC movie version of The Flash, in The CW’s Crisis on Infinite Earths event was a special last-minute addition, according to Arrowverse boss Marc Guggenheim. While the Arrowverse has seen its fair share of crossovers since its creation, Crisis on Infinite Earths was billed as the biggest, and it delivered on that promise. By connecting all The CW’s DC shows, as well as several other DC properties such as Titans, Smallville, and the 1966 Batman series, Crisis saw the Arrowverse’s multiverse reach its fullest potential. The five-part crossover had numerous cameos, but its most exciting one came in the fourth installment.

In a truly amazing moment, the Arrowverse’s Barry Allen (Grant Gustin) came face-to-face with the DCEU’s Barry Allen (Miller) thanks to the Speed Force. The CW’s DC universe has never before referenced the Warner Bros. films, but many wanted to see some kind of acknowledgement that there was a Flash both on TV and in the movies. The television show The Flash premiered in 2014. Meanwhile, Miller made his DCEU debut in 2016’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, though he didn’t get a substantial role until Justice League in 2017. A solo film with Miller has been in the works for a long time and only recently scored a 2022 release date.

While speaking to Variety, Guggenheim shed more light on how the remarkable cameo came together. Guggenheim and his team had already completed production on Crisis when Warner Bros. boss Peter Roth called and asked if Miller could be featured in the crossover. Guggenheim explained:

He then went on to say that they waited for Gustin’s approval before moving on with the cameo and that both Gustin and Miller were thrilled to do it. The last-minute nature of the scene means Crisis on Infinite Earths was very close to not connecting to the DCEU and that it was only through luck and everyone’s enthusiasm that it was able to come together.

We were series wrapped on Arrow, and we were wrapped on the whole crossover. We were in post and some episodes were locked, and some were soft-locked. I got a phone call from [Warner Bros. boss] Peter Roth saying, “I know you’re locked, but can you put Ezra into the crossover?” And I said, “Yes.” And he said, “How, you’re series wrapped? And you’re wrapped on the crossover.” And I said, “Yeah, I know, but if you’re telling me Ezra Miller can be in the crossover, I can make it happen.

Considering the popularity of both versions of The Flash, it’s no surprise that Miller’s cameo has already become one of the highlights of Crisis on Infinite Earths, if not the entirety of the Arrowverse. Fans were thrilled to see Miller alongside Gustin, even if it was for a short scene. What’s even more remarkable is how everyone managed to keep it a secret. In this day and age, spoilers appear on the Internet with such ease that nothing is truly surprising anymore. Luckily, DCEU Barry’s appearance in Crisis was able to remain a genuine surprise to the amazement of fans everywhere.
